Barre classes are big news at fitness facilities around the country. Based on the workout originally created in the 50s by German ballerina Lotte Berk, barre workouts have since evolved into a variety of popular programs. If you've ever heard of the Bar Method, Lotte Berk Method, or Core Fusion, then you've heard of the barre workout.

Though there are plenty of opportunities to find a barre class when you live in or around a big city, those of us living in more rural areas have no excuses for missing out. Portable ballet barres can turn any room in your house into a barre studio where you can get to work building long and lean dancer's muscles, too.

Barre workouts aren't going to have you doing box jumps or grand jetes, but they are just as effective at building strength, improving posture and increasing muscle tone. The workouts don't require any prior ballet experience, and generally incorporate small movements with a high number of repetitions, working muscles to failure. Many barre fitness enthusiasts credit the workout with bringing about noticeable changes to their bodies very quickly. And you don't need an entire home gym to get started. Just a portable ballet barre!

Not sure where to start? There are plenty of resources available. Search YouTube for barre workout videos you can follow from the comfort of your own home, or purchase a DVD or book to learn from. No matter which resource you select, most barre workouts will follow a similar format and will help you build your comfort level slowly.

Once you've chosen a portable ballet barre, you'll be ready to begin your journey to a stronger, fitter, more flexible you with barre workouts!
